Inter-school competitions

Here at St Thomas' we recognise the importance of children enjoying and participating in sport and physical activity. We promote children challenging themselves by representing the school in inter-school competitions such as the School Games competitions and events organised by the local pyramid. Visit here regularly to find out what the children have achieved recently.

Featherstone Swimming Gala

It was yet another successful trip to Featherstone Pool for the annual Featherstone Swimming Gala. The children were fantastic competitors, winning a total of 7 trophies. Every pupil earned a medal and the children really enjoyed the competitive atmosphere. St Thomas' is immensely proud of our swimmers and we would like to thank their families for attending the award ceremony afterwards, as well as the Featherstone Town Council for organising the event. Special thanks to Alice and the staff at Featherstone Pool for teaching so many of our children to swim and also for all their assistance in the weeks leading up to the event.

Featherstone Gala Running Races

A number of pupils represented St Thomas' in the running races at the recent Featherstone Gala. There were some excellent performances against some talented opposition and the children did our school proud. Macie and James won their races, Isaac came 2nd in his race, and Leon, Tazmin and Lucas came 3rd in their races. Congratulations also go to Dylan, Lola, Molly, Oskar, Henry, Leyton and Annalee for their great performances. Well done everyone!

LKS2 Rounders competition at Streethouse

A team of ten children from Y4 represented the school in the Pyramid Rounders competition which was held at Streethouse. Our children were fantastic, eventually coming an incredibly close second after having scored the same points as the winners Streethouse (the event was decided on the number of rounders scored). Well done to everyone in the rounders team!

School Games Y6 Mini Olympics at Thornes Park, Wakefield

Ten of our pupils recently enjoyed a day of multi-events at the 5 Towns Mini-Olympics Finals, held at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium in Wakefield. Despite the event being aimed at Y6 pupils, our team comprised of 3 Y6 pupils, 4 Y5 pupils and 3 Y4 pupils. This was an excellent opportunity for the younger students to gain valuable experience of what such an event is like, preparing them for future years. All the pupils did their very best and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Daily Mile Challenge

Y4 children have been participating since October in the Daily Mile Challenge, an initiative to encourage pupils to have healthier lifestyles by being active for ten minutes every day. Pupils have been working with a partner to see how many steps they can record on a pedometer in ten minutes of running around our Daily Mile track. Staff have been amazed at how much fitter the pupils have become! The training has culminated in a visit from members of the WMDC Healthy Lifestyle team who recorded the steps of the whole year group and then calculated the average for the school. We have come third in the challenge overall out of twenty schools in the WMDC area, with the winning school only scoring an average of twenty steps more than our pupils! As a result of our fantastic efforts, the school will be used as a case study for the benefits of the Daily Mile, whilst other year groups have said that they will be joining Y4 in the activity next year!
